Kosher
Chips and Kosher Coney Island Corn Dogs? What’s Next?
What’s great about summer away or at a beach near you is
as much about the food, as it is the scenery. Summer means fast
food. Come on – who can resist? Hotdogs, cold drinks, fresh,
hot French fries? The only caveat about these treats is that often,
for those who are observant or keeping kosher even when it comes
to fast food or on-the-go style foods like these, is the fact
that the stuff isn’t kosher. (And never mind, it’s
not even that healthy! But hey, it’s good as a sometime
treat). So, it’s fun to kick back in the kitchen and be
able to replicate some fast food classics at home – with
kosher ingredients and styling, and even better oils for frying.
No need to say no to your kids when you make a fast food court
or chip wagon in your backyard. It’s all good. It’s
all kosher. Even the rich, pareve brownies you can top the meal
with.
So enjoy, and happy summer.
Recipes
Coney
Island Kosher Corn Dogs
Hebrew National makes particularly great corndogs but any
kosher, all-beef hotdog will do. These are fun, delicious and
fast food authentic –but made at home. Use the regular hotdogs
– not over-sized ones.
Turkey
BBQ Burgers
Turkey is the original other white meat. Adding liquid smoke
to these is a cool kosher trick that adds a zesty BBQ flavour
to them whether you cook them indoors or on the grill. You can
also use lean, kosher ground beef for these burgers. The homemade
Challah Honey Whole Wheat hamburger buns finishes these off into
a meal.
Fast
Food French Fries
The best fries are fried twice. There is a special method
here that is the trade secret of bistro chefs. Just follow the
recipe. Match these up with a burger or Kosher Coney Island Corn
Dogs. What’s really best about these home-made fast-food
French fries is that they don’t use ‘bad’ fats
– you can use good old canola oil.
Honey
Whole Wheat Challah Dough Hamburger Rolls
Why not boost this lovely, lofty bun with a touch of white-whole
wheat flour and complex-up those carbs. It’s fast food but
better fast food.
Play
Ball! Baseball Brownies
Bake these oil-based, rich, fudge brownies in a jellyroll
pan. Semi-freeze and then cut into round baseball shapes with
a cookie cutter. Then smear with white fondant and then pipe on
baseball ‘laces’ or stitching with food coloring from
the tube. Fun and summery unique, being pareve, these are the
perfect dessert brownies to enjoy after a meat-meal (if you are
serving the Corn Dogs from this menu or any other meat bbq menu).
