Toasted Almond and Plum Jam Crescent CookiesHave Yourself A Nutty Purim

Purim is usually highlighted with a plethora of sweets and treats, namely hamantashen. In my book, A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking, and in the Clabber Girl archive of recipes, you will find many great traditional hamantashens and other great baking ideas for Purim gift baskets. But this year, I am feeling a touch nutty, which actually goes with the frivolous, topsy-turvy moods of the holiday itself. What ‘nutty really means in baker terms, is a collection of delicate, nut-studded ‘little’ cookies to bake and fill your Purim baskets with. These are definitely adult treats and offer a more elegant approach to a fun holiday.

These cookies are easy, bake up in huge trayfuls and do double duty filling up Purim gift offerings but also, being just the thing to serve with tea or coffee at your Purim party. Make sure the nuts you use are fresh. You can also cut the cookies in triangular shapes if you prefer. Just make them tiny and two-bite size.

Happy Baking and Happy Purim,

Nutella, that popular hazelnut and chocolate paste is sheer decadent when sandwiches inside this classic shortbread. There are also kosher versions of this wonderful baking ingredient. These cookies are crowd-pleasing.

Toasted Almond and Plum Jam Crescent Cookies
Plum jam adds flair to this delicate Purim pastry/cookie.

Key Lime Cashew Cookies
Thick rounds of cashew cookies with a Key Lime accent. Nothing beats the tropical scent of lime in the middle of March, Purim or not. Boyajian Inc. makes pure lime oil and is widely available or can be ordered online. If you do not have it, substitute lime extract (try Spice Etc.).
