Mother’s
Day Month and Shavuot Combine for Delicate Dairy Sweets….
May is Mother’s Day month, no matter which calendar you
are looking at. My three sons would argue that on the Jewish calendar,
in particular, it seems every month, all month long is Mother’s
Day! (if we moms had our way). But seriously, a salute to hardworking
moms is always in order and the gentle month of May is as good
an oasis as ever.
Moreover, with Passover just passed, and flour-based baking back,
as well as rich dairy desserts that herald Shavuot, I tend to
think towards simple sweets that are elegant, buttery, and just
the thing to have with tea or coffee, whether you are celebrating
a mom or a mom, being celebrated. This particular collection is
also nice if you select one or all three recipes to serve at a
cheery weekend brunch.
Enjoy, and to the mothers, grandmothers, bubbies and great bubbies
who enjoy a sweet nosh, Happy May, as well as Happy Shavuot.
Hazelnut
Almond Linzertorte
This pretty jam tart is really a large, fancy nutty cookie
baked in a tart mold. But once you cut it in wedges, the torte
definition makes sense (again). It is a lovely spring treat from
the old Europe side of the kitchen.
Cherry
Cheesecake Muffins
Sometimes you just need a little richness in a little cheesecake.
These hand-held cheesecake muffins are just perfect. You can anoint
these with cherry pie topping or simply dust them with confectioner's
sugar.
Stacked
Blintz Casserole for Shavuot Brunch
A great all in one brunch dish that is a nice addition to
a Mother's Day brunch or a Shavuot luncheon. Béchamel,
Parmesan, and Gruyere cheeses all stacked high between tender
blintzes. Bake it in the oven, cut in wedges to serve.
