Our Heritage
Over a century and a half ago, on the widely spreading
meadows of western Indiana, two German brothers set up a small wholesale
grocery. Immigrants to the great land of opportunity, the brothers found
commercial success on the western edge of the developed United States.
By 1849 Terre Haute, Indiana was a major trading city as travelers passed
through from Cincinnati to St. Louis, following the gold rush to California
and on to follow the Oregon Trail. As settlers pushed westward, Francis
and Herman Hulman's wholesale grocery and mercantile business flourished.
They soon built new facilities to mill spices, roast
coffee and distill liquor. Hulman & Co. became a major supplier
of food and merchandise for the region under several popular house
brands. These brands included Crystal, Dauntless, REX, Farmers
Pride and Clabber Brand baking powder.
By 1923 Clabber Girl Baking Powder had emerged as a leading
brand across the Midwest. Through the next few decades it grew to become
the number one baking powder in the country. Today Clabber Girl has
come full circle, once again providing a variety of food products, among
them are REX coffee, Farmers Pride jams and jellies, Delisheries Gourmet
Baking Mixes, Rumford, Davis and Hearth Club baking powders, Clabber
Girl cornstarch and, of course, America's favorite--Clabber Girl Baking
Powder.
