To me, summertime means let’s get out of the kitchen as soon as possible - or at least, do the baking earlier in the day. Even with central air conditioning, things heat up fast. But more than that, being outside to enjoy the weather is a call for informal baking, less clean-up (no one wants to spend a sunny day washing up too many dishes and bake ware), i.e. great treats one can perhaps, eat out of hand. Squares are perfect for this but I like cakes more often than not, especially for a summer BBQ summer dessert.
