Today you can buy good coffees anywhere in the world but none with the perfect blend that the old formula of 1878 prescribed that Rex should be. Upon the high plateaus of Central and South America grow the unique coffee beans that make Rex the imperial blend of coffees. Rex is made nobler still and more seductive by Nature herself. Every bean entering Rex is the pride of Nature. No bean is ever plucked until it has reached its highest point in flavor, fragrance and perfection.
Rex Coffee is roasted using the Trieste hand-sampling method, as it was when it was first introduced. Small batches of beans are roasted by hand, visually inspected by master roasters then cooled by air—not water. After roasting, each batch is cupped—a sampling of beans is ground and brewed to check for proper flavor.
Rex Coffee was first produced by Hulman & Co. in or around 1878. An exact date is not known, but advertising archives indicate a late 1870s date. Other coffee brands marketed by Hulman & Co. include Dauntless, Plantation, Hulman Mocha, Java and Crystal. The first Rex trademark was registered in 1905 when interstate commerce laws were enacted.
Rex, latin for “king,” implies royalty and nobility. That is why early advertising materials referred to the brand as “the imperial blend.” Some advertising referred to the brand as A-Rex, which is believed to derive from Augustus Rex (German kings August II and August III from the early 1700s and Friedrich August III). The A-R trademark on porcelain produced for the German kings was a well-established and respected symbol of quality.
Rex Coffee is sold in 12-oz and 16-oz bags whole bean or ground, with freshness valve to maintain peak flavor. It comes in Regular, Decaffeinated and Double X and in three flavored varieties as well: Cinnamon Hazelnut, Southern Pecan and French Vanilla.
