Apple Dumplings with Simple Syrup Sauce

These apple dumplings call for shredded apples, instead of the traditional apple baked whole in a crust. The result is a delicate and delicious dumpling!


  • Apple Dumpling Sauce
    • 2 c. sugar
    • 2 c. water
    • 1/4 c. butter
    • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. Clabber Girl Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • Apple Dumpling Filling
    • 1/4 c. sugar
    • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    • 3 c. cooking apples shredded


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 

Apple Dumpling Sauce:
In a large sauce pan combine sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add butter and set aside

In a large bowl combine flour, Clabber Girl Baking Powder, and salt. Using a pastry blender cut in shortening until pea size. Make a well in the center and add milk all at once. Knead 10 to 12 times and roll into a 10x12-inch rectangle.

Apple Dumpling Filling:
Combine sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the apples evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples. Roll the dough, starting from the long side and pinch the seam to seal.
Cut in to 12 one-inch pieces and place in a 13x9-inch pan. Pour sauce over the dumplings and bake at 350 degrees F. for 30-35 mins. or until golden brown.
