Apple fritters are rings of apples coated in batter that are either pan fried or deep fried. They look similar to doughnuts but have a special apple slice inside!

  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Rumford Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 lg. eggs slightly beaten
  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 qt. vegetable oil
  • 4 lg. apples peeled, cored and sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1/2 c. powdered sugar

Heat oil to 375 degrees F. in a deep fryer, cast iron skillet or Dutch oven.

Mix together flour, sugar, Rumford Baking Powder, nutmeg and salt.  In a separate bowl, beat together eggs and milk.  Stir milk mixture into flour mixture, mixing just until smooth.

Dip apple slices in batter and fry, a few at a time, turning once until golden brown.  Be careful not to crowd the fritters while cooking. Drain cooked fritters on paper towels.

Dust with powdered sugar or toss in cinnamon sugar immediately after frying.

Yields: about 12 fritters
