This is a classic Irish Soda Bread recipe, and it is important to use real buttermilk for a great tasting bread. You may also omit the caraway seeds and raisins, but they do help to give the soda bread a more authentic flavor.

  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. Clabber Girl Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. Clabber Girl Baking Soda
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 2 c. raisins rinsed in hot water and dried
  • 1 Tbsp. caraway seeds
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.

Mix together flour, Clabber Girl Baking Powder, salt, soda and brown sugar. Mix in raisins until they are thoroughly coated.

Stir in caraway seeds; add eggs and buttermilk and stir until thoroughly combined.

Knead on floured board 10 or 12 strokes; roll or pat out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with round 2-inch biscuit cutter and place on baking sheets.

Bake in preheated 400 degrees F. oven for 15-20 minutes. Cool on wire racks when done.
