Apple Dumplings Deluxe

These apple dumplings are just like the kind you would find in a fair or carnival, filled with autumn crisp apples and warm spices. Granny smith apples are perfect for the dumplings, but any baking apple may be substituted.


  • Apple Dumpling Deluxe Dough
    • 1 beaten egg
    • 8 oz. sour cream
    • 2 c. all-purpose flour
    • 2 Tbsp. sugar
    • 2 tsp. Clabber Girl Baking Powder
    • 1/4 tsp. Clabber Girl Baking Soda
    • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 c. apple peeled, thinly sliced
  • 1-1/4 c. sugar divided
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1-1/2 c. water
  • 1-1/4 c. brown sugar packed firmly
  • 2 Tbsp. Clabber Girl Cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • ice cream optional


Grease a 13x9x2-inch baking pan; set aside.

Apple Dumpling Dough: In a medium mixing bowl combine egg and sour cream. In a small mixing bowl stir together sugar, flour, Clabber Girl Baking Powder, salt, and Clabber Girl Baking Soda; add to sour cream mixture. Mix well.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into a 12-inch square. Spread apples atop dough. In a small mixing bowl combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; sprinkle atop the apples. Carefully roll up the dough. Cut into twelve 1-inch thick slices. Place slices, cut side down, in the prepared baking pan.

In a medium mixing bowl stir together water, brown sugar, 1 cup sugar, Clabber Girl Cornstarch, and lemon juice; pour over slices in the pan. Dot with butter or margarine.

Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree F oven for 35 to 40 minutes or till golden. Cool slightly. To serve, spoon warm dumplings and juices into individual dessert dishes. If desired, serve with ice cream.
