Molasses cookies are a holiday favorite, but can be made any time of year. True to their name, the molasses adds a sweet, rich flavor you just can't get out of plain sugar.

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup raisins finely chopped, optional
  • 3 tsp Rumford Baking Powder
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves ground

1. Cream shortening, add the sugar gradually, creaming until light and fluffy.

2. Add eggs, then the milk and molasses and raisins.

3. Sift flour, Rumford Baking Powder, salt and spices and add to creamed mixture, beating until smooth.

4. Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased baking sheet 1 inch apart and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F) 10-12 minutes.

Makes 4 dozen cookies.
