Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl, and in a separate bowl combine the milk, egg and water. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Add more water if the mixture is too thick.
Dip in meats, vegetables, etc., making sure they are dry before dipping so the batter sticks to them. Deep fry in oil at 350 to 375 degrees F.
Frying times vary depending on the type of food; meats take longer to cook, and work better when chopped into smaller pieces. Most food is usually done when it foats on top of the oil with a browned coating. Place on paper towels or wire rack to cool when done.
Makes about 3 cups of frying batter.
